Apollo Chemicals is the largest privately-owned UK manufacturer of liquid adhesives, sealants, primers, cleaners and liquid coatings. Based in Tamworth, the company has 160 staff and has plans in place for further growth. Following an expansion of their HR department, Apollo decided to access staff training through ‘Skills Support for the Workforce’. The objective: to support company goals and address identified training needs in health and safety, sales, team leading and IT skills. ‘Skills Support for the Workforce’ aims to upskill employees within small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Performance Through People deliver the programme, which is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency, on behalf of Serco in Staffordshire.
The initial phase of training saw 85 employees complete on site manual handling and/or fire marshal training. Feedback from these sessions was very positive, with 85% of participants rating their experience at 9 or 10 out of 10, and 94% rating the way the course met their objectives at 4 or 5 out of 5. Several staff have subsequently taken on extra responsibility as Fire Marshals, whilst others are able to operate in more areas of the business due to increased knowledge of how to safely move heavier items.
Staff members have also attended a range of other courses, including assertiveness, dealing with challenging situations, Microsoft Excel training and a Leadership and Team skills. Benefits noted include: improved relationships with suppliers, the ability to handle certain situations more confidently and more in depth knowledge of excel, which enables staff to take on more responsibility and create more detailed records.
