This apprenticeship gives an all-round grounding in welding and fabrication. It is suitable for people working in roles such as Fitter Welder, Pipe Fitter, Semi-skilled Sheet Metal Worker, Welder/Fabricator or Maintenance Welding Operative.
The apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of training, guidance, support, self-study and activities in the workplace. One day a week will be spent at our training centre 42 weeks of the year. The NVQ will be assessed using varied methods depending on learning style. Technical knowledge and functionality will be assessed through internal and external testing.
Mandatory units are:
- Complying with Statutory Regulations and Organisational Safety Requirements
- Using and Interpreting Engineering Data and Documentation
- Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering
Learners and employers can choose from a variety of optional assessment routes to make up the remaining credits for the qualification.

Apprentices who complete this qualification could progress to an advanced apprenticeship and may move on to team leader or supervisor roles.
