Intermediate Apprenticeship in Healthcare Support Services

The health sector faces the pressures of an ageing population creating higher demand for services alongside restrictions on budgets and apprenticeships are one of the many ways in which employers can seek to address these issues. A qualified and competent workforce is vital to ensure good patient experiences and the smooth running of services and this apprenticeship supports the development of skilled and effective staff while maintaining high quality care for patients.

People completing this apprenticeship will be working in roles such as Healthcare Support Service Worker or Ward Clerk.

Mandatory Units

  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Contribute to health and safety in health and social care
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • The role of the health and social care worker

Learners and employers can choose from a variety of units available from the optional groups to make up the remaining credits for the qualification.

The apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of training, guidance, support, self-study and activities in the workplace. On and off job training either through group sessions or on a one-to-one basis. The framework will be assessed using varied methods depending on learning style. Technical knowledge and functionality will be assessed through internal and external testing. A portfolio of evidence is required.

Entry requirements

Course Progression

With additional training and support apprentices may have the opportunity to progress in their careers to a supervisory role and undertake higher level professional qualifications within the health sector, including Advanced Apprenticeships.
